01 Project overview
Connecting Entrepreneurs With the Help That Already Exists
Every neighborhood in New York City runs on small businesses: the bodega on the corner, the barbershop, the flower stand, the new storefront that opened last month. Behind each one is an owner trying to find the right information at the right time, from registering a business to finding growth support to competing for a city contract.
Your Business. Our City’s Future. is an integrated small-business outreach campaign concept developed by PR Brand Marketing to demonstrate how an economic development or small business services program could reach entrepreneurs where they are, with a message that treats their success as the city’s success.
Built around the headline “Big Opportunities Start With Small Businesses,” the campaign leads with a main street advertisement and continues as a three-stage series, Start, Grow and Compete, so that each business owner can recognize the stage they are in and find the resource that matches it.
PR Brand Marketing developed the campaign to demonstrate audience segmentation, accessible messaging, neighborhood-focused creative and multichannel outreach capabilities for public-sector communications.
02 The communications challenge
One Program. Many Business Owners at Different Stages.
Small-business assistance programs typically offer a wide range of services, from business planning and registration to technical assistance, marketing and financial resources, certification guidance and procurement readiness. The challenge is that a first-time founder and an established owner preparing to bid on a city contract need very different things, and a single generic message reaches neither well.
For this independent concept, PR Brand Marketing developed a fictional communications brief focused on three challenges:
- Segmentation: Speak to entrepreneurs by stage, so an owner who is just starting out and an owner ready to compete for contracts each see a message written for them.
- Accessibility: Explain planning, growth and procurement resources in plain language, in the places where owners already are: the street, the storefront and the phone.
- Trust: Show real neighborhood businesses and real moments of help, so the program reads as a partner in the community rather than an office downtown.
The creative challenge was to make a broad resource program feel personal and immediately useful to one business owner at a time.
03 Our creative strategy
A Main Street Message. A Three-Stage Path.
PR Brand Marketing developed a warm, neighborhood-focused campaign concept that frames small-business success as a shared civic investment and organizes the program’s resources into a path any owner can place themselves on.
The creative strategy is built around four principles.
- Lead With the Neighborhood. The main street advertisement opens the campaign with a recognizable New York City corner, a bodega, a flower stand and a barbershop, so the first impression is the businesses the program exists to serve.
- Segment by Stage. The series breaks the program into three stages, Start, Grow and Compete, each with its own portrait, its own one-line description of the available support and its own call to action.
- Make the Help Specific. Each stage names concrete resources, from business planning and registration to marketing support, financial resources, certification guidance and contracting opportunities, so the message is a path rather than a slogan.
- Keep One Voice Across Channels. A consistent headline, color palette and photographic style connect the street-level advertisement to the digital and print series, so the campaign is recognizable at any touchpoint.
The street scene and the three stage portraits are conceptual illustrations created for this concept, not photographs of actual businesses, program participants or placements.
04 The campaign identity
- Primary campaign headline
- Big Opportunities Start With Small Businesses.
- Campaign name
- Your Business. Our City’s Future.
- Main street call to action
- Explore Business Resources
- Series stages
- Start · Grow · Compete
- Stage calls to action
- Learn How to Start · Find Growth Support · Prepare to Compete
Visual identity
The campaign uses a palette of deep plum, warm orange and soft off-white. Plum carries the headline and the stage names and gives the campaign a civic, established tone; orange highlights every call to action and the stage markers, so the next step stands out in each piece.
A bold serif headline is paired with a clean sans-serif for supporting copy. Photographic-style neighborhood scenes and portraits, consistent across the main street advertisement and the three stage panels, root the campaign in everyday New York City storefronts, and every piece carries the campaign name and an independent-concept footer.
Multichannel outreach approach
The Your Business. Our City’s Future. concept demonstrates how one campaign can lead with a street-level advertisement and extend into a digital and print series: the main street ad introduces the program where businesses operate, and the Start, Grow and Compete panels are designed to work as social media posts, printed cards for distribution through community outreach and panels for a program web page.
Each piece repeats the same name, palette and voice, so an owner who sees the street advertisement recognizes the stage panel that applies to them.
Accessibility & multilingual design
Accessibility was considered as a guiding principle in the campaign’s creative direction. The concept incorporates:
- One stage, one sentence and one call to action per panel
- Plain-language descriptions of program resources
- High-contrast type on solid color bands
- A visual stage marker that reads without the text
- Layouts with room for Spanish and other language versions, reflecting the multilingual storefronts the campaign depicts
The portfolio demonstrates accessibility-conscious design principles. Formal accessibility testing, qualified translation review and agency approval would be required before materials could be used in a live public program.

Main street advertisement
The campaign opens at street level. A New York City corner with a bodega, a flower stand and a barbershop sits under the headline “Big Opportunities Start With Small Businesses.” and the call to action “Explore Business Resources,” designed for bus shelters, storefront posters and neighborhood signage where owners and customers pass every day.
The three-stage series: Start → Grow → Compete
The series segments the program’s resources by where a business owner is. Stage 1, Start, speaks to new founders with business planning, registration and entrepreneurship education. Stage 2, Grow, speaks to owners ready for technical assistance, marketing support and financial resources. Stage 3, Compete, speaks to established businesses with procurement readiness, certification guidance and contracting opportunities with the city. Each panel carries its own call to action.
05 Project outcome
A Segmented Outreach System in Four Pieces
The outcome of this independent project is a coordinated visual and messaging system demonstrating how a small-business outreach program could be presented across a street-level advertisement and a staged series. The concept includes:
- A unified campaign name, headline and visual identity
- A main street advertisement for outdoor and storefront placement
- A three-stage series, Start, Grow and Compete, each with its own message and call to action
- Stage-specific descriptions of planning, growth and procurement resources
Proposed extensions of the same system would include additional outdoor placements, a program landing page organized by stage, a social media series, printed cards and flyers for community outreach events and Spanish and other language versions of each panel.
This is a speculative portfolio project. No campaign was deployed, no public audience was reached, and no reach, engagement, enrollment or contracting outcomes are claimed.
